Welcome
Welcome to the art of Bern Sundell!
His paintings create a wonderful sense of space and light, whatever subject matter he chooses. You are invited to explore his range of work on this site and share his sparkling view of the world.
A major series of work is the fly fishing series, which he paints with great passion as he has been fishing since he was nine in Montana. His knowledge of trout informs his work with an easy mastery.
His Indian warrior paintings are another area of major interest. Son of a forest ranger, he spent some of his early years living near Indians in eastern Montana and never forgot the imagery of those times in his life.

Hello, this is my first visit to your site. I was at my friend Joanne’s house tonight and was struck by the beauty of the art gracing her walls. I was smitten by a piece above her mantle…. “Thank you, it was a gift from my brother-in-law Bern…its a self portrait”, she said.
In her dining room, I admired the tactile beauty of gourds that adorned her dining room table and piano. She told me that she married into an enormously talented family.of artists. Still more treasures for my eyes, this time, I thought…in photography…cool, slippery river rocks…I could practically hear the river flowing over them. Joanne said that these were actually prints of sections of a large watercolor. I am astounded.
Which is why I am taking these moments to thank you. Thank you for bringing me, a New York City Girl living and raising her family in Western New York to Montana. My husbands late Uncle was a flyfisherman whose heart and soul belonged to Montana and you gave me a glimpse of Her majesty. Thank you for your talent, and for sharing it with the world. You have a great sister-in-law and your brother rolls a mean sushi roll!!!!!!
My best,
Bridget Koch
Bridget,
So nice to hear from you! I am glad my art has touched you. I must say that Joanne and Dan do have some nice works from the family. I might also mention that I have a fine watercolor Dan painted hanging in my living room, and some of my sister’s gourds as well.
Do come see Montana when you get a chance. Stop in RiverStone Gallery in Ennis and say hello to us!
